Between myself and the two other friends who are "one of us," as E.D. (one of them) once said, why write animal fables? We project complex ideas into the purrs, plaints and rumbles of our household pets. We put thoughts and words into other species' mouths that we ourselves might not be so comfortable to utter ourselves. Dreams, if we are to believe the somnolent twitchings of our favorite pooch, are not species specific. But in the creation of conversing characters with paws and jaws, we are immediately drawn into that most human of activities--imagining. On the other hand, I recall a long-distant conversation on that subject that netted something about our relationship to nature, certainly a pertinent topic at this moment in our planetary history.
